The audience started to clap and whistle, and the frustrated woman to my left leaned over and told me, "Go ahead, honey! Do it for both of us!"

"Go on, ma'am!" came a slow southern drawl from behind me, and the man sitting on my right leaned over to pat me on the shoulder.

"Atta girl," he enthused. "I been watching you all night, wondering what you'd look like up on that stage. Come on - why don't you get up there for us?"

I'd be lying if I said I hadn't already been toying with the idea myself - it had been in the back of my mind ever since the waitress had mentioned 'Amateur Night' - but now that the time had come to actually try it, I was almost unable to move. I must have seemed reluctant to the people around me, but in reality I was just drinking in the thought of it, rolling it around in my mind to savor the idea. My hesitation caused a renewed burst of applause when I finally stood up. I squeezed the shoulder of the woman next to me and gave her a wink as I walked up onto the stage.

Raising my hands for silence, I told the audience, "This is for the lady who wanted to dance, but couldn't. It is not," I continued, "for her husband!" and stuck my tongue out at him.
