The next week, late one Tuesday evening, I got a phone call from Sara Pemberton, who lived way down the road from us. Sara had been married to Ronnie, who was an up and coming attorney in the law firm of Pemberton and Heath. His father Roger and good friend Richard Heath began the firm. Ronnie joined the firm which also had Richard's son Stephan. This office was one of fine legal minds. Ronnie and Stephan were both 29 years of age.

In September of 1965 Ronnie and Stephan were on their way to Kansas City via the Kansas Turnpike. They were on their way to represent clients in the KC area when fog set in and they ran into a tanker truck filled with gasoline. The truck exploded and both Ronnie and Stephan were killed. It was a hard pill to swallow for many of us who knew them. The Heath's were longtime friends of my parents. My dad and Richard served together in WWII.

When she called, Sara asked me if I had heard the weather report, which I had not. She said that severe storms were coming our way and, since she was all alone in her home, she wanted both safety and some company. I offered to drive down the road to get her. So, I took my Corvair Spyder and drove the ¾ of a mile to pick her up.
