The Final Chapter. It's January 2009.

As I previously stated, I am an Airline Captain for a major airline. Due to a flu epidemic that ravaged the southeast at Christmas and beyond, many pilots were too sick to fly. I usually bid for two trips a week, and with my seniority, could choose my flying time. But a regional carrier for my parent airline called me to fly a Bombardier CRJ900, a 70 passenger regional jet, to Dallas and on to Wichita. When they told me what they'd pay, I said ok. At least I could go to mom and dad's graves as I hadn't been there in several years. I hadn't flown a CRJ900 in a couple of years, but I was rated in every type of aircraft my airline flew, so it ought to be a piece of cake. Both legs of the flight were uneventful. I landed in Wichita shortly after 1pm. After all of my cockpit paperwork was finished I deplaned and went to the car rental place. I got my car and headed to the Best Western, got my room, bought an Eagle-Beacon Newspaper, and settled in to watch TV.

I went to the obituary page to see if there was anyone I knew there and right square in the middle was a picture I knew all too well—that of Barbara Heath. She had died of congestive heart failure. Her viewing was at Cochran Mortuary, the same firm that handled both of my parent's funerals. The viewing was this very night, so I decided to go and pay my respects to a woman who'd advanced my sexual life ten fold. I only had my captain's uniform to wear, but that was OK.
