It was the middle of summer and my wife Tammy and I were spending a week in the countryside, staying at some guesthouse. On the last day we were there it was too hot to go rambling around so we decided to spend the afternoon in the local pub, sitting in their beer garden.

There was no one else out there except a couple of young lads sat at the table next to ours. We got talking to them, invited them to join us and started buying rounds for each other. One of them, Jimmy, came back from the bar holding four pints of beer in his hands, the beer splashing over the rim as he carried it. By the time he reached us he had spilled a great deal of it. His friend, Dave, started laughing at him and Tammy joined in, saying that when she was a barmaid she could easily carry four pints.

Later, when it came our turn to buy a round, Tammy accompanied me inside the pub. It was practically empty apart from a few guys playing pool so we got served right away. As I reached to take two of the glasses Tammy brushed my hand away and took all four pints in her hands.

"You sure about this?" I asked. "I can carry two of them."

"No way. This was one of the only skills I ever learned when I worked in a pub. Well this, and dodging the wandering hands of drunken old ...
