I first noticed her across the room. The event was your average cocktail party, and otherwise unimportant. She was not startling beautiful, Too plump perhaps, Facial features too strong, but nicely made up and what a pleasant smile. Lovely figure. I could see she was rather shy in these circumstances. Her husband, it turned out, was the mayor, a very big man and rather self-important. I'd never much liked him.

Funny. She attracted my attention for some reason. She noticed me looking at her twice. She was able to handle those who came up to speak to her, but I soon noted she did not approach others, content to wait quietly until the event was over.

My wife, Sybil, was doing her thing, chatting up everyone and she eventually made her way to the mayor. I tagged along. The introductions done, she launched into her pet project, a park she felt was being ignored by the town staff. I nodded agreement, said little but I could see him checking her out. She met his approval and he gave her his full attention. She is a pretty woman. I excused myself and wandered off.

Almost on purpose, it took a few moments to work myself around to her. I immediately liked the sound of her voice. And I caught the faint whiff of a fine perfume.
