"I'm afraid I have a rather unpleasant task for you...." said the headmaster, showing me to the guest chair in his office and offering me a cup of tea and one of his 'special' chocolate biscuits. "One of the girls was caught having sex in the sixth year common room. I've just been on the phone to her parents and they are insisting that we use corporal punishment rather than expel her. She has her A level exams next month and they don't want her to ruin her chances of going to University."

"Corporal punishment was never banned here on the Channel Islands although it is rarely used. And this is a gifted student. I am expecting her to get good results - and she will need them if she is fulfil her ambition to go on to study medicine at Cambridge. A student going on to Cambridge would look very good for the school too." He paused for a minute "I don't agree with corporal punishment either, but clearly something has to be done. We can't overlook something like this. And I really don't want to expel her before her exams."
