I wrote a short version of this story as a sort of "small plate." But I got lots of mail and comments that it was too short, that it ended too soon. So here is the "entrée" version.

He didn't even notice her at first as he walked up the street away from San Francisco train station. Suddenly he realized she was talking to him.

"Is this the right way for Pow Wall?"

He turned to look at her. She was Chinese, he guessed around thirty although she looked younger. She was smartly dressed in a dark business suit, presumably having come from work. She was short, barely five feet tall, and slim. Her black hair was cut short. She had a strong accent, probably came to the US as an adult.

"Pow Wall?"

"Yes, Pow Wall. There's a mall there."

"Ah, Powell. Yes, it's a few blocks to Market Street and then you want to turn left. Powell will be on your right. But you probably want the San Francisco Center on the left."

The lights changed and they walked across the street. ...
