Hot Work in the Summer Sun

Joy by name, joy by nature. My new photo assistant, Joy, has been with me now for about two months. She had come into my studio, looking for a job, having stated that she wanted to learn the photography business from the ground up. We talked for about an hour, discussed what the assistant's responsibilities would be, agreed upon an hourly wage and picked a start date, one week hence.

That turned out to be the smartest hiring decision I have ever made. Joy truly was a joy to work with. She made my life easier, lifting that case of lights, toting that sack of photographic paraphernalia. At age 23, and only 5' 3" tall, she more than held her own weight when it came time to set up and clean up.

Where December is my busy winter month for parties and holiday events, the summer months are filled with weddings, portraits and company picnics. This particular Saturday was to be filled with a huge company picnic, several hundreds of employees, milling about, plenty of food, games and amusements for the kids and several beer stations for the grown-ups.
