It's August 5, 2009 and as I was in the middle of teaching an advanced class of Ground School students when my cell phone began to ring. I noticed the area code was 316, which was from the Wichita, Kansas area. It was Michael________, oldest son of Rachel (whom you all got to know through the "Basement" series) telling me that his father Daniel suffered a massive heart attack and wasn't expected to live. His mother asked if I was able to come to be by her side during this ordeal. It was quite a difficult decision to make. After all, we saw each other in January at the funeral of Barbara Heath after I took a chance flight to Wichita. Before that it was forty years earlier. Michael pleaded his case and I said I would. I made a quick call to my fellow co-owners of the Beech King Air to see if anyone was going to use it and found it was available. So, I had a group of my students plot me a flight plan to Wichita and the remainder I asked to pre-flight the ship while I went back to my condo to pack for a week or more. I called the airline and said I wouldn't be bidding any flights due to a "family matter." I'm certain some of my colleagues jumped at the chance to bid the ones I usually took. It was OK by me.

When I returned to the airport all was ready. I started both engines and got clearance to the run-up area, completed my run-up, and the tower gave me clearance for take-off. I was on a 240 degree runway heading so a gentle bank to the right after take-off set me on my course. I climbed to 18,000 feet and settled in on my trip back home again. The weather report was good all the way. One stop at MO3, Conway, Arkansas ...
