The Joy of Sailing

(You don't need to read the previous story, "Hot Work in the Summer Sun," unless you need to refresh your memory about the characters.)

Joy continued to prove herself an able photographer's assistant. She was a fast learner and eventually, by the end of the summer season, she had started carrying a camera and helping me photograph events, covering more territory than just one photographer could.

Eventually, business tapered off with the end of summer and I decided to take some time off. I had always wanted to sail down to Baja, and with Joy onboard; I could feel at ease having someone as experienced as she was manning the helm.

We sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge one bright, sunny, late summer morning and set our course for warmer waters. I was finally getting the chance to see what my Hunter could do for an extended open-water adventure. And Joy was by now well versed with what made the 45-footer dance across the waves.

We put into Half Moon Bay, as much to check that all the rigging was as it should be after a few hours in open water. We had all the supplies we would need for now, knowing we would put into port along the way to resupply and rest. While at sea, we would pull regular watches during ...
