Chapter 4

Molly Grimes entered the "inner sanctum". Lady Leticia's private sitting room was off limits to the uninvited and especially mere mortals. Normally the domestic servant would not have presumed to intrude into the forbidding presence but Molly was also honor bound to let her mistress know when His Lordship was home or if any other momentous occasion required the countess's immediate attention.

Molly curtsied from force of habit. "Beg pardon my lady. I'm sorry to intrude, but your husband has just arrived. You should know he is not alone, this time." Molly's last two words were spoken with added emphasis which immediately grabbed the great woman's attention.

Lady Leticia carefully placed the book she was reading on a teak wood table, slipping a paper inside to mark the place. "Not alone, you say? "No, my lady. He's brought two young girls with him. I noticed them when they exited the carriage"

"Are they guests?"

"I don't know. They might be new servants. They are dressed very plainly and walk behind him, demure like."

Leticia lifted her thin eyebrows ever so slightly. "Servants you say? ...
