It happened this way. She was nineteen the first time I saw her. I was twenty-eight. Her father, who had worked for my dad, had died suddenly. Heart attack. For an accountant he was careless with his own money and had left his wife and only daughter without much. Overconfident, I guess. Rhoda was fresh out of high school and asked Dad if she could work for him and of course the answer was yes.
