Chapter 13

Molly usually brought lunch to Leticia and this is when the middle aged servant decided to inform her patroness about the sordid situation that she'd witnessed between Clive and that "trades woman." Still, even though she was doing her proper duty by informing Leticia about the affair, she was apprehensive in discussing such a topic with "the great lady". One never knew how this lofty personage might react to such a revelation. On one hand Leticia might be grateful for the information. On the other hand, she might take exception to a mere servant spying on and tattling on a member of the family proper.

Molly carefully placed the bowl of vegetable soup beside the plate of precisely sliced sandwiches.

"My lady, there is something you need to know. It involves your son, Clive."

Leticia had been sipping from her favorite tea cup. She was instantly alert. With a swift motion, she set the cup down on the table. "Proceed." Her tone was crisp, indicating that she would brook no evasion or euphemism. "The truth, if you please?"

"It has come to my attention that your son is amorously ensnared by the seductive charms of that new serving girl, Elaine Brigham." ...
