Something for the weekend, sir?

This curious phrase dates probably from the 50's , maybe even WW2. In these days condoms were available at your local barber. I suppose it was an all male environment, and not as embarrassing as buying them from a woman at the drug store.

The customer would have his hair cut and the barber would ask him "Something for the weekend ,sir?" meaning did he want any condms. Now who is going to say NO? A certain sale. Some chaps probably had cupboards full of them at home.

I get mine on line, by the way. Lots of shapes and sizes and colours and flavours, and contours always in stock.

ANYWAY, on to the story. When I first came to London I was 23 or so, and I had trained as a hairdresser. When I say trained , two people had shown me how to cut hair, both fashion and barber style, for about 10 hours total, and I had a diploma done on a friend's computer that looked legit to the naked eye.
