13 Legacy

April was soon replaced by May and its warm pleasantness. All through Tamworth town, life seemed to return in full sway to the place, even to the humblest hovels and the stinkiest swine sties. Lilies and glorious azaleas emerged as if magically bidden by some woodland deity, greeting the radiance of Helios as he made his daily pilgrimage across the limitless heavens. April had witnessed the beginning of nature's rebirth and now, sumptuous May made her annual appearance, promising a rich summer harvest for the agrarian community.

Even the lowliest peasant quickened his step or gave an unbidden smile as each day brought more warmth and freshness to the world. All were happier or at least seemed so except for one notable exception. Robert Marmion was not happy. Around him, the spring optimism mocked his very existence as if to increase his awareness of what he would soon be leaving. For months, his stomach had been bothering him with increased pain. The heavy drinking only served to somewhat lessen the discomfort. He'd also noticed with some alarm that he was loosing weight, in spite of relatively heavy meals. Now, his appetite was waning. It was if his body rejected the very meat and drink he lived on. The local physician was of no use in combating this draining disorder. The humors of the blood, forsooth! His belly burned as if a fire were kindled within. His skin was cold and clammy and his breath stank. Even in early morning he was fatigued and when he retired for a brief afternoon nap, he wondered ...
