After leaving the diner I walked somewhat awkwardly on the crutches, checking out the varied businesses on either side of the street. When I happened to see a taxi I hailed it and climbed in back, asking to be taken to the wood mill. The drive took the better part of twenty minutes.

A person had to have a pretty good idea where it was located as we traveled over several back roads before reaching a fenced property lined with thick pines. We drove along the fence until reaching a gate. As we were driving in, a truck hauling cut wood planks passed by on a second, parallel road separated by thirty feet of grass.

It wasn't but a few moments longer before we parked on a gravel lot along with a dozen other cars. To the north was a single story office building. From behind it, further in the distance, were the faint sounds of men shouting and large saws cutting.

Before getting out I told the driver that I wouldn't be long and would need a ride back into town. He acknowledged me with a nod before turning off the engine and pulling a pulp fiction novel from a back pocket. Apparently he was accustomed to delays.
