The Letter By xcited

This day began like almost every other day. I found myself in the kitchen cleaning the breakfast dishes, listening to the radio. I like to sing along, when certain songs grab my attention. I looked out the window at the flowers and thought about the work my husband so tirelessly put into these beautiful plants. He always told me that he wanted me to have flowers everyday and that this was his way of assuring that I had them. The thought of this made me smile. I sometimes felt sad for people I met that were dissatisfied with their relationships. I was loved, truly loved by another human being. I was loved by a man so completely that I never wondered what love was, I didn't need to, I had it.

I was clearing the table when I noticed an envelope in the center next to the napkin holder. I smiled and picked it up. It was not the first of these that had been left in that exact spot over the years, so I wasn't surprised. After holding it a few moments, imagining what wonderful revelations it might offer me, I opened the seal and removed a thick handwritten letter.

I sat down in the dining room chair at the table, reached for my reading glasses and put them on. I could almost feel his presence as I began to read his words. Within moments of beginning the letter, I knew that my world as I knew it was about to change. He wrote: ...
