Chapter 5

Sally May was in a dither. For the first time a boy had actually turned his back on her and just walked away without begging for a date. Well it wasn't the first time but it hadn't happened since Junior High. To make matters worse even though he was about as Yankee as general Sherman, he had blood connections to the Charleston Rutledge's. Why branches of that family had ever moved North was beyond her but nevertheless there it was. She loved those penetrating gray eyes and his dry sense of humor although she never could be quite sure when or if he was joking. She was sure mister Rutledge was worth snaring but she decided to call daddy Wilton before preceding any further.

Wilton Pedigru was a former army major who was now double dipping the system. He'd been in the engineering corps and now was a top manager in a steel plant in Pittsburgh. Sally revered her stern, no nonsense father. In spite of his taciturn attitude towards life in general, there wasn't anything Wilton wouldn't do for his little angel. It was one of the reasons that he'd gotten Sally to go to Bedford college. It was relatively easy to drive there from time to time.

Sally May had a well-furnished apartment just off campus. After all, a Pedigru lady wouldn't be expected to associate with the lower levels of society in a low life dormitory or even a sorority house. She would have been scandalized in her home town if such a calamity had ever been ...
