Jade's Negotiation

While tiding up their home office Jade discovered loan documents she knew nothing about. Her husband, John, had agreed to pay back the whole amount, seventy-five thousand dollars, by the end of this month. She was mortified as she read where the contract stipulated a twenty-two percent penalty on the unpaid balance each month instead of annually.

Reviewing their financial picture on their home computer took just a few minutes. Their savings, checking and what was left of their devastated investments amounted to less than ten thousand dollars. Barring a totally unexpected windfall, it was painfully evident to Jade her husband could not possibly meet the terms of the contract.

John being away at a new client's gave her a night and day to deal with the shock of seeing how much he had signed away to start up his business. Without her husband?s knowledge Jade made an appointment to discuss a loan extension with the banker the next afternoon. The banker's name was Geoffrey Ainsworth and business address was surprisingly in a ritzy residential neighborhood.

The banker was a surprisingly frail elderly man accompanied by two men. The one she knew from high school was introduced as his body guard. Ainsworth introduced her to the other as Will Chambers, a major partner ...
