Amy and I had rented a house down on the south coast. The house overlooked a small and secluded horseshoe-shaped bay with a small beach of white sand nestled between the rocky outcrops. The view was magnificent, but unfortunately it was lost on Amy, who has been blind since birth. She still appreciated the peace and quiet and the isolation. It gave her senses a rest, she said.

I led Amy by the hand down the path from the house to the beach. It was a warm day, bordering on hot, and Amy wore a white bikini. With her short bob of curly black hair, she looked really beautiful. I had a pair of navy board shorts on. We crossed the sand and stood at the water's edge, hand in hand, facing the sea. To her right, she could hear waves crashing onto distant rocks. Somewhere nearby, a pair of seagulls squabbled raucously.

"Tell me what you see," said Amy.

I told her, "The sun is bright. Everything looks sharp and clear. The sea is calm and flat all the way to the horizon." I paused and looked around. "There are rocky cliffs to our right and some dark, jagged looking rocks in the sea. The waves are sending up a big spray every time they hit the rocks." I looked down at my feet.
