Anatoli slammed his stick on the ice in frustration, muttering to himself in Russian when it broke. It was the middle of February and he was in a serious goal-scoring drought. He had three goals in the last twelve or so games and it was driving him crazy.

He felt like he was back in his youth league. Everyone seemed to race past him, and his legs felt sluggish. The puck went everywhere except where he wanted it to. If he sent a pass to a teammate, it skittered to the side or bounced over the stick blade. If he took a shot, he shanked it wide to one side of the net, or straight into the goalie's chest.

Frustration was getting to him, and after two undisciplined hooking penalties, Coach had benched him for the last half of the second period. His only—small—consolation was that he wasn't embarrassing himself in front of his home fans.
