It all started when my wife Laura had to leave on an unexpected business trip. We had already made plans to visit her older sister Paige on the same weekend, but the trip was unavoidable, and Laura's boss couldn't be persuaded to reschedule. So she had to break the news to Paige that we wouldn't be available for a day of bicycling in Reservoir State Park.

Laura and her sister have always been very close. Although they only live 30 minutes away, they often indulge in lengthy phone conversations several times a week. They enjoy each other's company so much, that it sometimes infringes on our own relationship. Whenever I brought this to her attention, I was sternly reminded that Paige was living on her own, and was shy about dating. Laura said it was her duty as a sister to include Paige in our social plans whenever practical, or until she is able to find a steady boyfriend.

So for almost an entire year, we invited Paige to almost every activity: movies, shopping excursions, music concerts, and sporting events. We had hoped that getting her out of the house would also introduce her to new people, increasing the odds of her meeting that special someone.
