CHAPTER 2

When she was little, Maggie Sersland loved her parents, Terence and Becky Sersland and they loved her. Her parents were a handsome couple and she was a vivacious, young girl. Maggie was high-spirited from the beginning. Her mother, Becky, was never intimidated by that and did not try to control it. She would often tell Maggie, "Don't let others take from you what is not theirs in the first place: your fire, your spirit."

Maggie's mother lived life to the fullest and encouraged Maggie to do the same. Their lives were magical until that one day when Maggie and her father, Terence, lost Becky to an accident. As she had so often done, Maggie's mother had pushed the safety envelope of her little blue sports car. She hit some "black ice," that was invisible to her. The ice caused the car to spin out of control and into oncoming traffic. It happened on Maggie's eleventh birthday.

Terence Sersland took it very badly and retreated to his work. In effect, Maggie believed that she had lost both parents the day that accident took her mother.
