"It all started out so innocently."

"Yes, but why would you let yourself get involved with a couple of young kids?"

"They weren't that young," I responded indignantly.

As I said, it all started out so innocently. The heat of summer can be wonderful if it's dry, with a soft breeze, maybe the scent of something pleasurable that you catch for just a moment. Flowers, perhaps. Smoke from a good cigar. A subtle hint of a favorite perfume or cologne.

That's how it was as I was walking down the sun-baked street, mid-July, mid-afternoon, a lazy day with only a few people out; everyone who should be working was, and the rest off to the beach if they were lucky, or at a game, or the park. I was taking advantage of the quietness of the stores, doing some back to school shopping. Nothing else had been on my mind, other than that slight tingle in my slightly neglected kitty, but nothing new about that.

A single grad student now, two years past thirty, with a share-time job ...
