CHAPTER 8

Maggie needed an "in," to get to her first target, the dean. She found it in his assistant, Ms. Connie Slocumb. Dean Arlen Cox and Connie Slocumb went to high school together. She fell in love with him, but another had ensnared him. And then he was gone to college. He never did marry that other young woman.

Connie graduated from college and almost immediately was immersed in the care of her invalid parents. She took care of them for years. Then she watched as her father passed away from pneumonia, and her grieving mother followed quickly thereafter.

When an already married Arlen read of Connie's tragedy, he hurried home for the last funeral. That day, he hired her to take over his graduate development program. That was the dean's pet project and as a result, they saw each other a lot.

Connie had had little time to invest in fashion, what with the consuming nature of invalid care. Although she felt she was a hot Scottish lass inside, she had little experience in dressing the part.
