CHAPTER 10

Maggie discovered the dean's project to be much more complicated than Connie's explanation had originally made it sound. She found that graduate schools were circumspect in the criteria they used to select a student for one of their programs. It was essential that she find out what that criterion was for each school and who at the schools made the decisions. It was the latter, the deciders, that Maggie felt she could influence the most.

Maggie's efforts bore fruit. She found a number of opportunities for the university's graduating students (e.g., for paid teaching associates), at schools of higher learning. She built a network with people doing the same thing at other colleges. Then she traded insider information with them. Maggie dug out the hidden requirements each opening had. When Maggie's network found a graduate school on the fence - deciding between students from the U of M and those of another school - she took action. She would talk Dean Cox into flying her out there to meet with the decision makers at their location.

She readily convinced those who made the decision in each case. She could remember the meeting she had with the three from the Sisters of Good Faith convent. They represented a religious university from the east coast. The university was going to offer a four year scholarship to a recent college graduate, possibly from outside their college, to ...
