The two couples had been neighbors since last summer, living side by side at the top of Scylla Circle on the outskirts of the big city. Todd and Brenda were seated beside each other on a long, red-leather couch in the living room of Frank and Kerry. Frank was a physical education teacher at grade school, and Kerry, his wife of seven years, worked at home, writing a financial advice blog as well as working with a small but wealthy list of clients.

Todd always had plenty to talk about with Kerry, as he too worked out of his home in a business related to money matters, as an editor for a number of financial newsletters and company publications. Brenda, like her neighbour Frank, made a daily commute to the downtown core, where she worked as an accountant for an advertising agency.

It was a beautiful, cool Saturday night in April, the first day of Spring. Frank had opened the windows just a crack earlier in the day, and hoped they wouldn't need the AC for at least another month. He poured a fresh glass of wine for Kerry and their guests, and after a toast to the new season, he picked up where the conversation had left off.

"So, Brenda, let me get this straight. You and Todd met in college, right? But you just said something about having to fight off the guys in high school - and you had to fight ‘em off again your first year in college." ...
