Jack returned my message later that day, stating that he and Crystal had been out and he hadn't found my message until early evening. He also told me they were watching a DVD before she went to bed and that he would phone me later that night.

Not knowing what time a ten year old girl goes to bed, especially while in the company and care of her ‘part-time' father, had me feeling rather anxious and wishing I'd asked for an approximation of time instead of simply replying ‘OK CX'.

The call eventually arrived at 11:30 p.m. and I could hear the sheer joy in his voice. He evidently loved his daughter very much and I wasn't sure how much of a problem that may turn out to be if we started dating regularly.

It wasn't a problem for the foreseeable future, at least, so I turned in my computer chair and listened to his deep soothing, occasionally erratic voice.

‘So I was thinking Charlie, I take Crystal home on Friday, so are you free on Saturday night?'

‘I haven't planned anything, so yes, I suppose I am free.' ...
