The Next Chapter

A half hour after Sarah and Tania had woken up the majority of our neighbours with their loud and rowdy account of their time at the Hudson's of 47 Willow Way, the police arrived in response to the disturbance.

They had received 23 separate calls from concerned residents apparently. Trevor explained, rather haphazardly and drunkenly, to the two male officers that the perpetrators were ‘people we met at the pub' who were invited back for a drink and then caused an argument. He said he didn't know anything about them other than their first names and that as they weren't local he didn't expect to see them ever again.

The reports of the sexual allegations that Sarah and Tania had announced to the street were refuted by means of feigned confusion and denial of a known motive to say such things on all our parts.

The police left with nothing to declare except a stern assertion of their authority, but we all knew that the real damage was already done. Every single person in the street of generally affluent and insular individuals would know every implicit and explicit detail of the ‘scandal' by the next evening. That was exceptionally bad news for the Hudson's and my little family across the road, but there was absolutely no point in trying to refute allegations that many of our neighbours ...
