This is the kind of thing that never happens to me, well except for this one time. It began a quite a few months ago and now I'm undecided what to do next. The following is what happened.

I live in a low rent apartment complex on the third floor. My neighbors are mostly hard working people and a mix of diverse ethnic, religious, and educational backgrounds. I'm thirty-two, Caucasian, college educated, athletic, and I like to think that I'm fairly open-minded. You might be wondering why a college-educated man would be living in a low rent apartment. Well, the fact is that I'm researching for a project that I'm working on, and it is here in this complex, that I can find the necessary material. Anyway, I'll move onto the subject of this story.

Above me lives an African-American couple. They moved in after I did and while I would see them from time to time, I didn't really know much about them. I would of course say "Hello" and the obligatory "How are you?" Gradually over the course of time I got to know her a little, but not so much with him. He seemedÉÉ..wellÉÉ..stand offish. I asked her once why he appeared to be this way and she simply shrugged her shoulders and said quietly, "he doesn't care much for white people." I never brought the subject up again.

She appeared to be in her late twenties and him just a bit older. They had no children and as it turned out, were not planning on having any ...
