A Roman Adventure

My dream had finally come true: I was going to Italy!

Long had I waited to finally receive the letter that accepted me for what could turn out to be the most important of all archaeological digs. I was only a second year student, so having been chosen to come along was a great honor.

Leaving for Rome four weeks later and I could hardly contain my excitement. We had two days before we would leave for the dig site at Lake Nemi. Even though Caligula's ships had been excavated in the 1930's, there was still a lot of territory uncovered. And even though some artifacts remained, both vessels had been burned during WWII.

Since we had time to do some sightseeing, I decided to go to Vatican City, not that I was hoping to get a glimpse of the Pope, but because I wanted to see some of the amazing and sometimes controversial structures. Walking around Piazza San Marco, I couldn't help but notice the Obelisk rising from its center. I wondered how many people knew that Caligula had been the one to bring it to Italy from Egypt to be placed at his racetrack.
