"Varity Gardner," The woman's voice boomed from somewhere in the darkened hallway echoing off stone walls. It was a young voice but one used to command; one used to being obeyed. "Take thirty paces forward."

A slight breeze of chill air brought a shiver to Varity as she tried to quell her nerves and start forward. Broad heeled shoes clacked against the stone and she had to count each step under her breath. When she reached her mark she stopped abruptly and wrung her hands once before letting them rest at her sides. Any calm she displayed was totally contrived: she was terrified beyond her wits.

Two women, one from either side, approached with a broad candle and placed them to her left and right. She didn't look. Her instructions had been clear in the letter she received: eyes forward at all times and do exactly as she was told. There was a hidden implication of punishment if she chose not to obey but the thought of defiance scarcely crossed her mind for more than a few moments.

"To enter this house of God you must be cleansed, Varity," The voice spoke with a grave weight full of true commitment. "There are two stages: your body and your soul. Remove all of your clothing."
