Chapter 1: Neighbors

I work from home as a ghostwriter. When you read books by famous sportsmen and you wonder how come someone so tongue-tied managed to write a reasonable book, it's because someone like me wrote it. I've been doing it for nearly thirty years, so I'm fast and always deliver on schedule so I'm never short of work.

I live in a typical suburban street in a typical suburban town. I keep thinking about moving, because I have the money, but I can't be bothered. I'm a single guy so no wife nagging me about upgrading our life. Instead I upgrade my home. For instance, I'm the only person on the street with a swimming pool. It turns out that the swimming pool has more advantages than just a cooling dip.

One day I'd been out and I came home to find several of the neighborhood teenagers in my pool. I told them off for not asking but I also told them they could use the pool whenever they wanted if they behaved. My office is on the second floor and looks out onto the pool so it wasn't just me being kind, I get regular teenage bikini-clad eye-candy when I look up from my computer.

The houses on either side of me are families. I've been over to both their houses many times over the years. Since I live on my own I'm often invited over for Thanksgiving or Christmas when they take pity on ...
