LISA CAUGHT OPEN-MOUTHED

It was a quarter past twelve when I caught my secretary, Lisa.

She didn't expect me back from a lunch with clients--rich clients of a rich securities firm who demanded and received first-class treatment. But they called my cell phone as I rode a taxi toward our aborted meeting. So I told the driver to turn around, take me back.

As I nearly walked into my office, something caught my attention and I stopped, and listened. Because I thought I heard Lisa's soft voice say something very wrong.

Standing next to her chair, outside the door to my office, I waited, trying not to make a sound. Lisa's voice was mechanical but urgent. She was reading statistics from some kind of document to someone. Sounded like there was someone on the phone.

It was over quickly, and I just as quickly walked in. Lisa stared at me open-mouthed. I acted as if I had heard nothing. She acted as if she was innocently at my desk to deposit a folder. There was no reason for either of us to suspect the other and the moment passed. She glided back to her desk.

But I had come in with intention. I wanted to see what Lisa was reading ...
