Office Hours

Dr. Kelley was my Bioethics professor my freshmen year in college but we all called him Dr. K. He was in his late 40s, very tall, maybe 6'3" or "4 and in good shape. He was graying a bit but I thought it made him look distinguished. When one of us said something that amused him, his smile was spontaneous and boyish. Our class had only 13 students and was discussion based—things often got heated as we talked about topics such as cloning, genetic engineering, egg donation, and prenatal testing. Dr. K was always impartial, often playing devil's advocate to challenge our preconceptions and to help us be sure that we had thought through our opinions.

One day, after a particularly heated debate on genetic testing, I walked out of class with Dr. K and headed towards his office. It was natural, I thought, for a student to have a crush on her teacher—they never led anywhere. I had just turned 18 that summer and while I had flirted with many guys, even kissed a few; I hadn't yet learned anything about the art of seduction.

I continued to stop by his office throughout the year even after the class was over, making sure that every time I did I wore something revealing. Our meetings often lasted close to an hour, much longer than I'm sure he had time for. But other than that, he gave me no indication that he had any interest in me other than as an overly keen student. ...
