Jenni heard the static of the baby monitor, and her motherly instincts immediately kick her heart rate up a notch. Roused from her deep sleep, that notch didn't amount to much, but it was enough to start her stirring in bed. Barely opening an eye, she noted the time: 5:20. 10 minutes left until the alarm went off, but now her body was already starting to wake itself up. She quietly chided the baby in the other room for waking her up, however unintentional it may have been. She'd have to remember to turn the volume down, just slightly, the next night so the rustle of blankets or the soft cough of her child didn't come through the speaker.

Slowly awakening, eyes adjusting to the dim light coming from the lamps outside, Jenni began to stretch herself out, trying to carefully avoid the warm body lying beside her. Alex, a year younger than Jenni at 25, was still breathing deep and slow, unaware of the baby monitor a few feet away. She didn't blame him of course, he'd only been sleeping over her place for a few days now - he likely still wrote the noise off as some other outside sound that deserved as much attention as a truck's brakes or a bird's chirp. Still, she was happy that he was there, even if he wasn't good for much more than chasing the little one around while she took care of chores or cooked them all dinner.
