My granddad, Poppy, lives in Key West, Florida half the year, from late fall through early spring. He's been doing this ever since I could remember. Poppy had invited me before to bring some buddies down and stay with him for spring break. So my last year in college I decided to do just that.

The fact that I wasn't doing spring break with Mary Beth had caused friction between us (not to mention that I was having second thoughts about our relationship.) Mary Beth decided to do spring break with Kelli & Katie along with 3 other of their sorority sisters in Destin, FL, and Jennifer was going to spring break in Jamaica with Brittany, Renee and another wild chick I barely knew. I hated to even imagine what would happen with them in Jamaica.

Vic, Psycho, Mack and myself packed as light a s possible, just a duffel bag each. All we needed was some shorts, t-shirts, sandals and tooth brushes anyhow. We tossed those in the trunk of Vic's Ford Mustang and headed south on Friday after classes. It was a long drive, about 18 hours or so, from (UGA) Athens, GA to Keywest, FL. We drove straight through each taking a turn driving while the others napped. When we got there we just slept for a few hours.

When we got up Poppy & Lizbeth had sandwiches and cold beer for us. Poppy has always been super cool. He hooked up with Lizbeth about 3 years after Nanny died when I was just a kid. Lizbeth is about 20 years ...
