THE CHEERLEADER LOTTERY

Central High won the game 32 to 3.

But even though they all played their hearts out on a warm autumn afternoon, no one in the locker room seemed tired. They seemed, instead, ready to start a game.

Forty-one football players, still in dirty, sweat-stained uniforms, gathered together. With them were all ten Central High cheerleaders.

"Okay, here's the drill," said the quarterback. "Nobody made a mistake out there, really, except that they did get three points against us. So it is the decision of the five team co-captains that the worst players of the day are the eleven guys who were on defense when they kicked that field goal."

The names of each of the eleven players were written on individual slips of paper and deposited in a helmet. The head cheerleader reached in and picked out one scrap of paper.

"Rick Steele" she read out clearly.

There were no sounds of joy, just whispers.
