The Black Mail Club (Wendy’s Boss)

Wendy’s boss was named Caroline. She was a middle level executive for a Richmond-based company and seemed surprised to see me walk into her office with no warning from her secretary. Before she could speak I sat in one of the very comfortable chairs in front of her desk and spoke.

“Your secretary’s gone for the day, it’s nearly seven o’clock. These kind of hours could ruin a marriage.”

“I’m calling security,” was all she said. She did so by pressing a button. She nervously eyed the door silently hoping, I’m sure, that the security guys would get here soon. I’m sure that even though I was well dressed she thought I was some kind of maniac.

I thought it would be polite to make conversation while we waited:

“How was your business trip to Williamsburg, Caroline?”

“Hmm?” Now she looked more confused than frightening.

“It must have been exhausting,” I said tossing a five by seven glossy on the desk.
