My life had turned very lonely. I had just turned 55. I had just retired. But I was alone in a 3 bedroom ranch style house. My wife had died 4 years ago. My wife had been a few years older than me but when she died, it was still shocking and she was gone too soon. It was devastating to me. Luckily, I still had my work to keep me occupied. Now, I was retired and alone.

When my wife and I had married, she was widowed. At the time of our marriage, she had a 13-year-old daughter, Ellen. Now, years had passed and Ellen was 37 and married and had a daughter of her own. After my wife's death, I didn't hear much from Ellen. I guess I was just the stepdad. I would get Christmas cards from Ellen and her family but other than that, I seldom heard from them.

Then, things changed.

One day I got a phone call from Ellen. She was sobbing. At first it was hard to understand what she was trying to say. She was very upset. She told me that she had found out her husband Ray had been cheating on her. She was leaving him. She couldn't stand to spend another moment in that house. Too many memories. She had nowhere to go. She didn't know what to do.

I told her she could live with me. She was thankful. She said it would just be until she could get on her feet and find a permanent place. ...
