Crime Never Pays

Back in 2006 my wife and I started a business in financial services. We had a few investors which got us up and running pretty quickly. By 2008 we were doing well, but then things started to go bad in the economy. We suddenly found ourselves in serious trouble by the 2nd quarter in 2009 along with many others.

One day I was talking about the issues we were having to an accountant friend of a friend. We had known each other for years but we were never close. He had tossed a few ideas out on how to keep our heads above water until things improved. I didn't really consider them because they were pretty shady, but they stuck around in the back of my mind.

The next day I started talking to my wife about it and we started contemplating one of them. We discussed it for a few days and decided to contact the guy who gave us the idea. Basically he was suggesting a way to fix the books.

We started doing as he suggested the following month. Things appeared better so our investors got off our back a little so we were happy with our decision. By the end of 2009 we were out of hot water and started shifting the books back.
