Helen left the school for the last time that day. A coach pulled by a horse drew up in the courtyard of the school, Helen climbed into it. The coachman cracked his whip and for the first time in a few years Helen was outside the walls of the orphanage and school where she had been living.

Helen looked at amazement at the city of London, having only seen it in pictures for most of her life. She wondered whether she should just leap from the carriage and see if she could make her way in the world, before she realized that the carriage doors did not have any handles on the inside.

Eventually they arrived in the courtyard of another building and she was taken inside into a room with a bed, chair and wardrobe. She was left alone. As the door shut she heard the key turn in the lock. There was a large jug of hot water there and so Helen took off her orphanage dress and washed herself. Looking over her shoulder at the mirror in the bathroom she could see a cross on her left buttock. Right now it was an angry red but she knew it would heal into a life-long brown cross.

The wardrobe contained several dresses, all her size, so she put one of them on. She felt happy, not knowing what the future would bring but trusting that it would be the start of the next stage of her life. The start of her adult life.
