Before Helen had left the school, James had given her advice about the second auction. The first auction had been aimed at rich people wanting a trophy for one night. The second auction was aimed at someone wanting a permanent purchase. The auctioneers had discovered at some point in the past that they could get higher prices during auctions for sexual slaves by having more of a party atmosphere than would be appropriate for a fine art auction. So traditionally the auction was conducted as a roman slave auction. The auctioneer, and most of the potential purchasers in the audience, would be dressed in roman togas over their Victorian clothes, or, for the more daring, over their naked bodies. Helen, too, would be dressed in a toga although she was not surprised to learn that it would not last long and she would be auctioned naked. A famous painting by the French artist Gérôme purporting to be of a roman slave market was actually of a Christie's auction in London.

Helen arrived at the auction naked except for her roman toga. She walked out onto the raised stage. In the middle of the stage was a large desk and Mr Christie stood to one side dressed in a mustard colored toga. There were a couple of naked female servant-girls on the stage too.
