This particular story concerns one of two teachers who reside in the close; the other one being Jennie Masters, whom I mentioned at the start. Robert Daniels, a 30-something bachelor, and not just in his personal life, teaches Economics at a local high-school.

Luckily for Robert, he lives at the end of the close where the approach road runs, and so he's unaware, if that's the right word, of the sordid goings on at No13, while his neighbour at no 11 is seemingly above reproach.

Discussing Alec Beck, a troublesome young student, with one of his fellow tutors, Robert discovered that he had achieved an ‘A' in her study class. Deciding to check further, and with the other two tutors whom Alec studied under, he discovered that they had both - much to his surprise- given the young man perfect ‘A's'.

‘Why was he doing so badly in my class, compared with his other three studies,' Mr Daniels wondered. Wanting to get to the bottom of things, in case he himself was somehow failing the young man, he sent a letter to Alec's home, inviting him to attend a meeting in his classroom at 4pm. ...
