I've known Marcus for years. We stayed friends after university and hang out together every so often. At least once a year he has a weekend party at his parent's house in the home counties about thirty minutes drive out from London. His father was in the diplomatic service, travelled around a lot, and did very well for himself when he married into money. He takes an annual break with his wife to St Lucia for a few weeks and Marcus gets roped in to housesit while they're gone. Their place is a big, sprawling country house with doors that seem to lead off in all directions. Me and Marcus laughingly call it his "Starter Stately Home" but in all honesty it isn't far off.

Friday evening the traffic was hell coming out the capital. The big consolation was the warm weather. I'd bought an MX5 last year and this was one of the first few opportunities I'd had to drive it with the roof down after the previous dreary, rainy English summer. There's something about a convertible that attracts female attention and today was no exception. I crawled past several cars with well groomed office manager-type women looking on with interest at me. Their BMWs seeming very staid next to my fun car.
