When I was twelve, Widow Clark, out next door neighbor, passed away one Saturday morning. I remember the day well as school had just ended for the year and I was sleeping in when I heard the sirens fade in front of our house. I peeked out the window and saw them carrying her out on a gurney. Mother told me later that she had died after being admitted to the hospital. The house sat empty for two months as the final legal operations settled for the family. I had always secretly thought that Mr. Clark was Superman because his name was Kent Clark, never realizing that I always had the names reversed in my mind. During the third month a new family took ownership of the house and moved in quickly over the Memorial Day holiday. On that Monday, there was a knock on our door and when Mom opened it, she had to look down as the caller was a cute blonde five-year-old who held her hand out and I heard her tell Mom, "I'm Sybil Taylor. I live next door. You can call me Sibs. What's your name?"

Mom invited Sibs in and told her that I was Mark and that she was Phyllis. Mom gave her a glass of the fresh lemonade she had just made and Sibs sat at the table talking with Mom as if she were an adult. Mom found that they had moved from Richmond because her Daddy had bought the Ford dealership from our own retiring long-time dealer. When Sibs was ready to leave, she reached in her pocket and gave Mom and me a business-like card with her name, address and phone number. As she left ...
