Three years as governor was more than enough to secure the fortune of Gaius patronius Falco. True he had to spend a fair sum of money to bribe the magistrates when he got back to Rome as a result of the inevitable complaints that usually accompanied such an undertaking. However, as acquisitive as he was, many had been far worse. The only downside to returning to Rome was that Caligula was in power. So prudently, he decided that it was time to retire from politics for awhile and hide himself in relative obscurity in the resort town of Herculaneum. This small town is just a stone's throw from Pompeii near the sinister presence of Mount Vesuvius. Herculaneum was noteworthy for its fine quality bath houses, restaurants and exclusive slave auction houses not to mention some excellent quality brothels.

Falco's wife had perished in a freak accident involving a runaway chariot, a drunken driver and a slippery stretch of pavement due to a brief summer storm. Falco wasn't sad. She'd always made it difficult for him to engage in slave girl peccadilloes. Now that his son was beginning a military career and his daughter married off, he was free to do his thing. This was further assisted by the fact that he was now living a very safe distance from Rome.
