I really like my vacations. Really. I look forward to them. I try to enjoy every second while they happen. And I generally feel kinda down on the last day before I head for home as the realization that the good times are almost over. About then, I make a vow to pack in as much pleasure as possible while I can.

So I'd planned a final dinner to remember. The good steaks were still in the fridge, and that one bottle of cabernet lay on its side in the dark closet. And the cognac bottle was still sealed and hiding in one of the plastic boxes. We had three more bodies to feed than I had planned on, so I had to work on plan B to increase capacity as we paddled back.

The two ladies were in a relaxed and playful mood, laughing and splashing each other with the kayak paddles. The lake was smooth and the breeze comforting and the mountains forgiving of our foolishness. I didn't even mind the extra work I'd need to do to fix dinner. So you can imagine my disappointment when Mitch announced that he wanted to drive back to the city that afternoon. And Joyce chimed in the she wanted to leave, too. Funny how they both smiled when Susan asked if she could ride home with Julie and me on Sunday. I guess they wanted to be alone.

And just like that, quiet fell upon the mountain cabin. Julie helped me in the kitchen with some prep for dinner. I'd poured a good Scotch for her, and I had my single barrel bourbon. Susan was content with a glass ...
