The Neighborhood Tutor By Sureshot

My name is Mark Edwards and I live in a northern suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. By trade I am a CPA, working now out of my home. I am a widower, having lost my wife to cancer three years ago. We had no children. I am 39 years old, standing 6'3" and weighing 215 pounds. I am also an assistant professor of mathematics and statistics at a local community college.

My four classes that I teach--two for freshmen and two for sophomores--are quite full. I love to teach and I love to practice accounting as well. The subject matter is difficult and I keep it that way. The generation sitting before me cannot even think on their own unless they have a have a calculator with them. So, I teach from the old, time-honored 'process method.' If the kids follow the process, the answer will always be right. If they skip part of the process--it won't. It's that simple.

It was about four weeks into the semester that a small group of students came to me, asking if I would tutor them a bit. Up front I made it clear that they (or really their parents) would pay generously for my time. The college frowned on teachers using school property for anything like what I was being asked to do, so I got the group of six together--four women and two men--and asked if they lived close to my home.
