The rain was torrential. The temperature was dropping too, and it was starting to turn to sleet. My big 4x4 shrugged off the downpour, the high-beams cutting through the darkness. Soon it would probably be snow but I didn't really care, by then I'd be at my cabin.

I worked in the city but I had a cabin in the mountains. Really primitive. Off the grid. I had a diesel generator for electricity but that was it. No phone. I wasn't even in a cell-phone coverage area. Inside, the cabin was like one of those New York lofts with one big open area that was at once bedroom, living room and kitchen. The bathroom was separate, of course, but that was the only wall in the place.

My foot was on the brake before I even realized why. I felt the shuddering of the ABS as the tires struggled to get a grip on the slippery pavement. Two people were on the road, walking towards me. Two girls. Bedraggled and soaked. One blonde, one dark haired. Early twenties maybe.

"What's going on?" I said to them.

"We ran off the road," the blonde said. "But there was no cell coverage so we decided to walk to the top of the hill. But the rain started and so we came back to the car."
